Why you’ll love Ultherapy® skin tightening
Any skin tone
Light-based treatments can lead to pigmentation in dark skin tones. But Ultherapy® bypasses the top layers of skin, to penetrate its deeper layers. This makes it suitable for any skin tone.
Non-surgical
Ultherapy® is completely non-surgical. It uses heat delivered via ultrasound waves to induce collagen production in the lower layers of skin.
No downtime
Unlike traditional facelifts, or even strong laser treatments, Ultherapy® requires no downtime. You can go resuyme normal activities immediately after treatment.
Clinically-studied results:
Ultherapy® boasts an 85% satisfaction rating, and a 93% effectiveness rate.
This goes along with 50 clinical studies, and 90 peer-reviewed papers to back its technology.
Ultherapy® skin tightening has also been a NewBeauty award winner for at least 8 years, and counting.
Why us?
In the past we carried an older version of Ultherapy®, which our patients found to be too painful to tolerate. The new and improved Ultherapy® has been relaunched at our clinic (as of 2022). It’s less painful than before, and it’s demonstrating wonderful results.*
Our technicians are regularly trained by a Merz Aesthetics representative – the company behind Ultherapy®. We’ve learned how to carefully monitor the skin through ultrasound visualization.
Understanding the ultrasound screen means we can avoid ‘ouchy’ spots, such as where nerves or blood vessels are.
We also customize treatments by sending ultrasound waves to the right depth for each area of the face. This means switching transducers as many times as we need to, so you get the best outcome possible.
What is an Ultherapy® procedure like?
Draw zones
Using careful measurements, areas are marked for treatment.
Apply gel
Like all ultrasound procedures, gel is used to help the transducers glide more easily across the skin.
Monitor and pulse
While live-monitoring deep skin tissue, pulses of ultrasound energy are delivered section-by-section.

What conditions can Ultherapy® treat?
Our Surrey Ultherapy® treatments can be the perfect solution for:
- Mildly sagging jowls and cheeks (for a jawline contour)
- Mild skin laxity under the chin (or, for removing ‘double chin’ fat, see our page on Belkyra™)
- Mild skin laxity on the neck (i.e. a forming ‘turkey neck’)
- Lowered brows (for a brow lift)
- Fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck and décolletage (i.e. chest area)
- Boosting collagen production as a way to prevent signs of aging
It is important to note that Ultherapy® will not produce the dramatic effect of a surgical facelift. However, it can have highly satisfactory results, when expectations are realistic.
Some people may not be candidates for Ultherapy®. This is mainly because their case requires surgery to see reasonable results. If you are unsure whether Ultherapy® is right for you, we encourage you to book a consultation at our Surrey clinic. We’ll take a closer look, and let you know our honest opinion.
How do your Vancouver Ultherapy® treatments work to tighten skin?
Ultherapy® uses ultrasound in two ways during a Vancouver skin tightening treatment (in Surrey). They are:
(Click on a title below to expand its details)
Ultrasound visualization with DeepSEE® transducers
Firstly, ultrasound visualization is used to see the treatment area beneath the skin’s surface. This experience is similar to receiving an ultrasound scan for a health diagnosis, or during pregnancy. It is completely painless.
The visualization devices used for the Ultherapy® device are unique in the aesthetics field, and patented. They are called DeepSEE® transducers. They emit frequencies (with no ionizing radiation – like all ultrasounds) between 4 and 10 megahertz (MHz). They can reach up to a depth of 8mm, but usually only up to 4.5mm is needed.
By comparison, a diagnostic ultrasound would use between 2 and 18 MHz. The lower the frequency, the deeper it can reach in the skin.
Energy delivery through micro-focused ultrasound (MFU)
Secondly, there is the energy delivery part.
This is when ultrasound waves produce heat. The heat is transmitted as deep as where a surgical facelift would reach (an area called the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, or SMAS). It intentionally destroys collagen through a process of “thermal coagulation.” This is essentially heating up multiple, small, 1mm areas in the skin to between 60°-70°C.
Three different transducers are used and switched out to be able to target the right areas, at the right depth. They reach 1.5mm, 3mm and 4.5mm.
Like with all skin rejuvenation techniques, when collagen is destroyed in a controlled manner, the skin begins to produce new, fresh collagen. This results in a more youthful appearance in the skin. Collagen is the protein that keeps skin firm and ‘bouncy.’
Is face lifting with Ultherapy® painful?
Older versions of Ultherapy® were painful. However, the newer model, which we have at our clinic, does not produce that much pain. Multiple members of our staff have had this treatment, and were able to tolerate it with no pain killers or anesthetic.
The pulses do produce a tingling sensation. And, there may be a few ‘zingers’ during your treatment. However, since the technician will be able to see under your skin with the ultrasound images, they can do their best to avoid sensitive areas, such as where nerves or blood vessels are appearing.
Ultherapy® is also pre-templated so as to avoid treating areas that are known to be painful.
Plus, the few ‘zingers’ you may get go away very quickly.
Afterwards, some residual, but mild, swelling or tingling sensations may remain for a few hours, to a few days. See below for more information on side effects.
If you wish to take over-the-counter painkillers before your treatment to avoid pain, that is a possibility. However, we recommend speaking with our doctor about it first. Some medications should not be used, such as blood thinners.
How many Ultherapy® treatments does it take to see results?
Ultherapy® requires only one treatment for most people, to see results. Some patients may need more than one treatment.
Results begin to show between 2 to 6 months after the treatment.
A typical maintenance plan would see patients come in for Ultherapy® sessions every 12 – 24 months.
This is because after the initial treatment, patients continue to age (of course). The rate at which each person ages is entirely individual. So the length of time results last can also be individual.
The frequency between treatments can be shorter, if one wishes to ‘stay ahead of the game.’
A doctor may also recommend a different treatment plan for your case.
Are there side effects with Ultherapy®?
Ultherapy® comes with no downtime and virtually no side effects for most people.
The most common side effects are redness, swelling, tingling, welting and tenderness. These usually resolve within a few hours to a week.
It will be important to avoid alcohol and blood thinners before your treatment.
We will ask you for your health history before performing this treatment on you, to ensure it is safe for your case.
Pregnant women should not undergo an Ultherapy® treatment.
Ultrasound technology itself has been used medicinally for over 50 years. In fact, it can be used to treat tumours!
Does ultrasound produce harmful radiation?
No it does not. There are two types of radiation: ionizing and non-ionizing. The one you should be worried about is ionizing radiation. All ultrasound devices produce non-ionizing radiation.
What’s the difference between Ultherapy® and HIFU?
The type of ultrasound used with Ultherapy® is called micro-focused ultrasound (MFU). This is a narrower, more focused type of ultrasound than high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), which is also marketed for aesthetic purposes.
The problem with HIFU technologies is that they can reach bone and fat, which can be more painful. They also do not come with imaging screens. This means their treatments must be done ‘blindly.’ Hitting the wrong areas with ultrasound can have adverse results, such as unintentional fat loss, or worse. Or, they can simply have no effect.
For this reason, Ultherapy® is by far, the safer, more effective choice.
