For mature skin, it’s important to continue good skin care routines that you’ve established in your earlier years. Everything that was said about ingredients to use in your 40s would still apply in your 50s and beyond.
However, this is when you may notice pronounced skin sagging, with folds and grooves along with it. In addition, facial fat loss or accumulation may have changed your face shape and contour. You may have formed a pointed or double chin, shallow temples, nasolabial folds, and lowered eyebrows. These changes on the face can happen regardless of body weight changes.
The good news is that the above skin problems are treatable. Though, they are not necessarily reversible without surgery. Of course, they are best solved when they are prevented.
Pursuing professional face lifting and skin tightening in your 50s and 60s
While professional face lifting and skin tightening can be sought at any point in your adult life, they can have the most visual impact in your 50s and 60s.
At this stage, you will want to look into more of the ‘major’ non-surgical skin treatments. Examples include Fraxel® DUAL laser skin rejuvenation or fractional CO2 skin resurfacing.
You can consider a non-surgical face lift to help raise your expressions and create smoother contours. These are performed using Botox® and injectable dermal fillers, like Juvéderm®. Injection treatments need to be repeated regularly, since their ingredients are eventually absorbed by the body. However, they are highly customizable, and can be done on select areas that you choose.
Sagging skin (i.e. skin laxity) can be addressed with multiple, cosmetic ultrasound treatments, such as Ultherapy®, or radio-frequency tools. These help to tighten the skin by stimulating collagen production in the deeper dermal layers. Thread lifting is another innovative way to lift loose skin.
Chin fat can be removed with an injectable like Belkyra™, or with special applicators on the CoolSculpting® machine.
The benefits of non-surgical treatments in your middle-aged years don’t stop there. These days, cosmetic technologies can help with visible veins, scars, body fat, acquired moles, urinary incontinence and more. They are also not age-dependent. If you are under 50, you can still get them done.
Proper skin care should be a lifelong ritual with lifelong habits
Having and maintaining healthy skin requires an early start. It also needs a thoughtfully-devised, life-long regimen with common sense (i.e. keeping the skin functioning healthily as an organ). It should take into account the many changes that our skin goes through as we age.
Skin care routines build upon themselves as we age. Some parts of our regimens should never change – such as using sunscreen, and moisturizing our dermal layers adequately. In other cases, our skin conditions call for special action – be it added exfoliation, antioxidant ingredients or non-invasive cosmetic procedures.
In the end, skin care can be proactive, reactive or restorative. How we take care of our skin will have a profound impact on how it looks in our latter years. It’s never too late to start!
