What is Levulan Photodynamic Therapy?

Levulan, also known as 5 aminolevulinic acid or ALA , is a photosensitizing agent. The agent is applied to the skin and activated by the correct wavelength of light. These treatments remove sun damaged areas on the skin called actinic keratoses. Fine lines, sun damage and blotchy pigmentation are also improved because of this treatment. This treatment minimizes pores and reduces oil glands and is therefore effective in treating acne and rosacea and improves the appearance of some acne scars.

How much improvement will I see?

Patients with severe sun damaged skin may see excellent results. You can also see an improvement in large pores and acne scars and active acne can improve dramatically.

How many treatments will I have to get?

The number of treatments is best determined in a personal consultation and ongoing session results but on average a series of 3 treatments, 2 to 4 weeks apart may be needed. Some patients may find that one treatment is enough to see a good result and may then only need to get periodic treatments.

Is there any “downtime”?

Following this treatment, there may be redness and peeling for up to 7 days. There may also be temporary swelling of the lips and around the eyes and some dark spots may become even darker before peeling and revealing normal skin. As Levulan is a photosensitizing agent, it is important to remain out of the sun as much as possible for at least 24 hours following the procedure and to wear sunscreen.

What are the advantages?

Photodynamic therapy is ideal for photo damaged skin because it:

  • Is well tolerated
  • Is non invasive
  • Gives excellent results
